Bringing together new perspectives on well-known events, as well as lesser-considered legacies, desires, and battlegrounds, this collection examines how a variety of movements were shaped by 1963’s climactic events. Contributors explore how activists invoked the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation to expose the unfulfilled promises of 1863, forged new alliances across social and political movements, and used film, photography, and literature as powerful tools for political expression.
