We publish books that bring together rigorous research and compelling writing to advance knowledge and spark conversation. From specialized research to accessible narratives, our books connect scholarship with a wide range of readers. We welcome projects for scholarly communities as well as for general readers. We do not publish original fiction or poetry, religious works, children’s books, festschrifts, or unrevised dissertations. We do consider translations of literary works in limited arenas.
First Step toward Publication
If your project aligns with our active subject lists, send a one-page letter of inquiry to [email protected]. Your letter should include these elements:
An overview of the project
Your intended readers
The current status of the project
Your qualifications, a C.V., or biographical sketch
If the Press would like to learn more about your project, an acquisitions editor will contact you directly to invite a proposal. Please do not send a complete manuscript unless invited to do so.
Due to the volume of inquiries and submissions our editors receive, we unfortunately cannot accept editorial inquiries by telephone. Unsolicited telephone inquiries will not be returned.
Submitting a Book Proposal
If the Press invites a proposal in response to your inquiry, or we have asked specifically that you submit a proposal, please refer to these guidelines in preparing it.
Your proposal should provide a clear description of your project. When preparing your proposal, consider the following questions:
What key problems or questions does your project address?
What previously unknown or forgotten story are you planning to tell?
Why does this project matter? What contribution will your project make?
Who is the audience for this project? Dissertations have a different audience than a book, so if your work is a dissertation, we strongly recommend reviewing our guide for Revising Your Dissertation.

What Happens Next?
Proposals are reviewed by the acquisitions editor for your subject. You can expect a response from the editor in four to six weeks. If the project fits within the current publication priorities of the Press, the acquisitions editor may ask you to submit a full manuscript for review or discuss the possibility of an advance contract.
Please note that the Press does not return proposals or materials when a project is declined.
