Ebook Accessibility

The Press is committed to making our publications as accessible as possible. For the most accessible ebook experience, we generally recommend purchasing the epub format. Accessibility can vary depending on the reading system, device, and file.

Beginning in January 2025, our newly produced epubs are designed to conform to WCAG 2.2. Level AA and epub Accessibility Specification 1.1 Level AA.

These epubs typically include features such as:

  • Structured readings and navigable table of contents
  • Meaningful reading order and semantic markup
  • Image descriptions (alt text) where appropriate

As of July 2025, we provide ONIX accessibility metadata using codelist 196 to recipient and distribution channels to help partners and readers understand available accessibility features.

Epubs published between January 2022 and December 2024 also include important accessibility features (e.g., alt text for images) and many were produced using WCAG 2.0 AA or 2.1 AA-aligned practices.

We are actively remediating selected older titles to meet current accessibility expectations. Beginning in July 2023, we initiated a backlist remediation program prioritizing titles in high demand and those used by students in courses.

For all ebook conversions, we work with vendors who are accredited by Benetech’s Global Certified Accessible program. We test epubs using the accessibility checker ACE from the DAISY Consortium, alongside other technical tools and additional review as needed.

Alternative Formats

The Press has partnered with Bookshare to facilitate access to alternative formats of our books. If Bookshare does not have the title you’re searching for, you can submit a request to them. You can also send requests to [email protected] and include information about the class the student is taking and whether they have purchased a copy of the book.

Website Accessibility

Our website, newly redesigned and launched in 2025, was designed to conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, Level AA. We work to maintain this standard through methods such as applying proper heading structure to webpages, using alt text for images, and minimizing the use of PDF documents as forms or instructions on informational webpages. We are working to either eliminate or make all such PDF files accessible by April 2026.
