Ancient Cities

Series Editors: Scott R. Hutson, University of Kentucky; Nam C. Kim, University of Wisconsin-Madison; and Augusta McMahon, University of Chicago

One of the most significant and enduring topics of interest in archaeology has been the nature of past cities and how they might inform our understanding of the present and future. Researchers have long considered the ways various processes and experiments—social, ontological, political, aesthetic, economic, ritual and more—have worked in concert to shape and transform surrounding environments, contributing to the establishment of large-scale and permanent settlements. This series highlights the many forms of urban settlements that have existed in the past, featuring mounting empirical evidence from varied global regions to help us better appreciate how these cities and related societies operated. We welcome studies that foreground the unique aspects of particular cities and/or broader empirical patterns that cut across space and time.
